For this part of WordPress Credits, I set up my own personal website, and I want to share what that experience was like.
Why I chose WordPress.com
The program offered two hosting options: WordPress.com and Cloud86. I chose WordPress.com because it installs WordPress automatically, which made it a good fit for someone completely new to the platform like me. I could focus on learning how to use WordPress instead of worrying about server setup
The challenges
Since this was my first time working inside a WordPress dashboard, everything felt unfamiliar at first. I had to learn where things were in the menu and what each section was for. The theme also came with sample content, like a placeholder address in the footer and a “No search results” message on the homepage, and finding where to remove them took some exploring. It turned out they were part of the site’s templates, which I could edit from the Site Editor
What I learned
The biggest lesson for me was understanding the difference between posts and pages. Pages are for content that stays the same, like my About page, while posts are dated updates, like this one. I also learned how categories help organize content, and that I can customize a post’s URL to make it shorter and cleaner.
Looking back, I went from not knowing my way around WordPress to having a live website with my own design and content. It’s a small step, but a meaningful one
